Push For PT Update

(A very sweet rendition of what could be PT's ride next season)
A few days ago I posted an article asking for you to slide over the Paul Tracy's page on the Monster Energy Drink website and send a "shout out" expressing your support for a Monster Dallara on the grid next season.

As of now there are over 550 comments asking for Monster to sponsor PT next season, and it may be working. Yesterday Tracy tweeted "keep the shout outs coming to monster, it has not gone unnoticed !!!"

Tomorrow on Trackside with Curt Cavin & Kevin Lee, Paul will join the duo, as will one of the campaign starters Steph (@99forever) to discuss the "Push for PT". The show can be heard in Indy on 1070 AM or around the world online at 1070thefan.com

If you haven't made a shout out yet feel free, and remember it's for the best of the Series.

HVM Plans 2 Cars In 2010, Viso Out

After a rough 2009 season, HVM Racing still plans to return to the Indycar Series grid as a 2-car team in 2010. One of the 2 rides will be filled by Robert Doornbos who came to the team mid-season after leaving Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing.

With the expiration of E.J. Viso's contract, HVM is currently looking for a talented 2nd driver to pilot the teams other Dallara. HVM didn't say that Viso was out of the running for the ride next season, but it certainly sounds like they want to go in a different direction.

“We have a historically successful team, and the core members of the team are still the same. But we could benefit a great deal by adding a few people who have been in this particular series a little longer than we have – people who have more experience with the nuances of an IndyCar program. We are also focusing on putting more resources into further technical development during the off-season.

2009 has not been typical of HVM’s performance, but everyone is committed to turning things around,” Wiggins said. “But I don’t think we need to reinvent the wheel. We need to add a few key pieces that will make us more complete and, as a result, return us to being a truly competitive team.” -Keith Wiggins

Wheldon Confirmed At Panther For 2010

After weeks of speculation that the Dan Wheldon was on his way out of Panther Racing, today they confirmed that the 2005 Indianapolis 500 Champion will return for a second season. It was widely reported that both Wheldon and Panther Racing were unhappy with the way things were going and that they would part ways fallowing the season Finale in Miami.

It's unclear as to if the National Guard will return for a 3rd season with panther, but they say a sponsorship announcement should be made in the coming weeks.

"What I can tell you is that we’re going to be fighting tooth and nail to improve. We’ve got a group here that we really like, and I’ve made clear in the last two weeks what my expectations are for our team and driver." -John Barnes

"I’m excited for next season, honestly. Anytime I’m out of a racecar for too long I get restless. But I feel like we made some progress towards the end of the season after some struggles that show we’re heading in the right direction.

My goals are to win races. Obviously we haven’t achieved everything we wanted for the season, so for next year I’d like to build on the momentum that we’ve created this year and make it a winning season." -Dan Wheldon

Help Get Tracy A Ride

You either love him or you hate him, thats the kind of driver Paul Tracy is. But either way, I think we can all agree that if PT had a full-season ride the Indycar Series would be better for it.

Tracy's personal sponsor Monster Energy Drink has updated there website, giving PT his own page. On his page is an area to "give a shout out", and as Tracy said "Make as many posts as you can at monster , maybe the light bulb will turn on more brightly". He currently has over 100 comments telling Monster to sponsor PT for a full-season ride in 2010, but the more the merrier.

Brazil Officially Official

UPDATE: Curt Cavin reports that "Somebody did a false posting" of the Brazil story on Indycar.com. But I'm not buying it. The story was dated October 31, 2009 and written by Dave Lewandowski, writer of many Indycar.com stories. I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like the story is accurate, just posted to early, time will tell.

-----------------------------------------

After Months of speculation, the Indycar Series season opener in Brazil has finally been confirmed. For the first time, the Indycar Series will head south for a 9 turn 2.3 mile circuit through the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

TV Bandeirantes, owner of 102 TV affiliates throughout Brazil and broadcast rights owner to the IRL will promote the March 14th race.

"The scenery is the best ever, I think, for an IndyCar event. The key was to design something that would take in all the beauty of Rio and portray it to the viewer while building a safe racetrack where there are good overtaking areas. I feel we've achieved that and it definitely will be one of a kind.

The city of Rio de Janeiro really gave us a blank canvas to design the course. The course offers a very smooth surface and it will be a very fast track with three very good passing zones. We really can't thank the city and organizers for their efforts to make this a one of a kind race setting." -Tony Cotman

"While our primary focus continues to be building the sport of IndyCar Series domestically, the race in Brazil affords us a unique opportunity to visit a country that has a huge passion for open-wheel racing. With strong support from our major partner Apex-Brasil, a significant television package from TV Bandeirantes, a large number of drivers from the country and the opportunity for a unique course, it makes sense from both a business and competition standpoint." -Terry Angstadt

Mann Set To Test With Sam Schmidt Motorsports

After her Panther Racing Firstone Indy Lights team was shut down fallowing the 2009 season, Pippa Mann didn't know what next season had in store. Less than 2 weeks after the season finale, Pippa is set to test for Sam Schmidt Motorsports at Kentucky on Thursday with fellow Brit and brother of Justin, Stefan Wilson.

Just a day after the FIL Finale Pippa's teammate at Panther, Martin Plowman was signed by the 2009 Champs, AFS/AGR. Pippa is expected to annonuce her 2010 plans in the next couple months.

"The only Firestone Indy Lights car I have driven up until now has been the #16 Panther Racing car, so it will be extremely interesting for me to test with another team. The chance to do so with an outfit as highly regarded as Sam Schmidt Motorsports is a great opportunity for me, and I’m really looking forward to getting onto the track. Although we’re still undecided on plans for next year, this gives me a positive feeling about what we’re trying to achieve." -Pippa Mann

"I have had the opportunity recently to speak with Pippa at length about her goals and ambitions in motorsports and was extremely impressed with her drive, determination, and focus to be successful. She has a very disciplined and technical approach, and we are very much looking forward to testing with her." -Sam Schmidt

Newman Wachs, Edwards Could Make Jump To IRL

It looks like 18 year old John Edwards and his 2009 Atlantics Championship winning team could be making the jump to the Indycar Series in 2010. As first pointed out by The Other Side, SPEED's Marshall Pruett has written a pretty convincing article.

“There are two areas we’re considering, one is GP2 and I’m not as familiar with that series, but we’re talking with people; that would take Edwards overseas again. The other is IndyCar.

I wouldn’t try to do it without tailing onto an existing IndyCar team. When I started my team I figured, ‘I’m as smart as anyone else; there’s no reason I can’t built and staff my own team to become a winner,’ and it took four years for that to happen. It gave me even more respect for guys like Carl Haas, Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi to see just how much it takes to build and develop a sound and winning organization. We won’t try to start from scratch. We may join another team if we go that way, and we may use that as something to launch from.

Our big concern is if we can keep funding it ourselves. We’ve been almost fully funded by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Entergy. They are interested in our plans and they could be a player, but they haven’t committed at this point. We haven’t put that one to bed yet.

If we were to run GP2 it opens up a whole new avenue for us. Obviously, we’d have to be with the right team. It would certainly be new for us, and its something we haven’t done before and I’m sure it would be interesting. There would be a lot to learn. If we stay in the United States, what I really want to do is launch John Edwards.” -Eddie Wachs

The Speedway Is Not For Sale

According Bruce Martin of VERSUS, the sky is not falling. Check it out.

“I love my brother Tony dearly. We really wanted him to accept our offer of running the Indy Racing League and focusing all of his energy on that because we think it is very important to our family. We were stunned and deeply disappointed when he turned us down and decided to step down completely.

The decisions we made in that meeting were to improve the business side. This is a family-business and we want to keep it that way. We want to have the business strong and start preparing the next generation of leadership within the family with Jarrod and Kyle Krisiloff, Jessika Gunter, Olivia Conforti, Lauren George, Tony Jr. and Ed Carpenter.

We want both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series to remain strong for the day when the next generation takes over the family business.” -Unnamed "Sister"

Suites Available At IMS

Have you always wanted a suite at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Well, you can start mining your couch coushins for quarters, because $110,000 will get you one of the vacant IMS suites for a year.

Of the 120 suites at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 15 are available for the 2010 season. If you decide to make the leap for a 80 person suite, you'll also receive pit and garage passes.

If interested you can call the IMS sales department at (317) 492-6750. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday IMS will be holding an "open house" for anyone interested in leasing one of the 15 suites.

"Think about it as a Monopoly board. The high-end district where everybody wants to be is Bardwalk and Park Place. The suites are where everybody wants to be at the racetrack.

With the economy and its impact on the automotive industry, that is one of the reasons a lot of these suites have become available." -Ron Green, IMS spokesman

Potentially Huge VERSUS Deal

This could be Huge...
------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
Comcast Corp. executive Jeff Shell said at an industry conference in June that expanding the sports business at his cable networks was the "top of our list over the next five years."

If Comcast's bid to control NBC Universal succeeds, it would advance Mr. Shell's goal overnight, creating a potential new rival to Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN.

As the cable-TV giant and NBC Universal's parent, General Electric Co., work through details of a deal that would merge Comcast's cable networks with GE's NBC Universal, people close to the negotiations say the two companies see the creation of a combined sports business as a key benefit of a partnership.

The new company would marry Comcast's VERSUS and Golf Channel cable-sports networks and multiple regional sports networks with NBC Universal's broadcast-sports operation and rights to major sports events, including a Super Bowl and two Olympic games.

A big thanks go's out to Arni Sribhen for the heads up

Homestead-Miami Preview

By: Tony Donohue

The Indy Car Series will finish up the exciting 2009 season this weekend at the Miami Homestead Speedway. For the first time in series history, the site for the season's final race will be held at Homestead. Since Homestead has been on the scheduled, dating back to 2002, it has been the kick off race to season. It takes the finale duties away from the Chicagoland Speedway. It has been over a year and a half since the Indy Car Series has ran at Homestead. Many stories lines head this weekends race, of course the exciting championship finale and among others, drivers look to end the season on a high note, and gain momentum for next season, as others will display their abilities in hopes for a contract next season.

Lets start with the championship. Scott Dixon leads teammate Dario Franchitti by five points, and is eight points up on third place Ryan Briscoe. Briscoe lead the points heading into last months race at Motegi, but wrecked in the pit lane, falling him to third in the standings. Franchitti and Dixon have the expereience. Dario hung out in 2007 to beat Scott Dixon at the final race, claiming the win and his first Indy Car Championship, and last season, Scott Dixon came down to the wire with Helio Castroneves to take the crown, his second of his career, but don't count out Briscoe. We have seen all year, when Briscoe is hot, he is hot. He has 2 wins on 1.5 mile ovals this season, and will be in contention. It is clearly very hard to pick the winner of the championship, it will come down to patience, great pit stops and a little bit of luck. My championship pick. Dario Franchitti.

There is plenty more to watch for this weekend. Lets start with Newman Haas Lanigan Racing. It adds driver Alex Lloyd to its lineup, he will pilot the second entry sponsored by HER Energy Drink, and speaking of pink cars, Sarah Fisher will pilot her new #67 Pink Dollar General Honda to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Indy Car officials will also be sporting the pink colors. Tomas Scheckter is also a driver looking to get a ride for next season. He has always ran well at Homestead, including 2 Poles in his career there, look for him to be in contention, just like he was at Chicagoland. My pick to win this weekend though is Graham Rahal. Newman Haas Lanigan has won a major open wheel race every year dating back to 1994. I think the streak will continue, with a win in the final race. I think this will be one of the most competitive races of the season, with alot of different strategies being used as teams will have nothing to lose heading into the off season. My dark horses for the race are Tomas Scheckter, Ed Carpenter and Mario Moraes.

You can catch the race at 4 est on Versus Saturday afternoon. Also, follow @16andgeorgetown and @tonydonohue on twitter for updates and comments during the race. 16thandgeorgetown.com is also on Facebook and Myspace, so please add us to your friends list. Stay updated through the offseason on our site. Upcoming driver interviews and stories will get us through the long off season. I will also be doing some articles looking back on the past decade of Indy Car races, and more Where Are they Now articles will be posted! Everyone enjoy the final race of the season!

Fisher Announces 2010 Schedule

While adding Jay Howard to the 2010 plans for SFR, Sarah will also be expanding her schedule next season. The addition of Howard and Tire Kingdom will also allow SFR to purchase a 3rd chassis.

Sarah's 9 race schedule will consist of:
  • St. Petersburg
  • Barber Motorsports Park
  • Kansas
  • Indianapolis
  • Texas
  • Iowa
  • Chicagoland
  • Kentucky
  • Homestead-Miami
Jay Howard will run the #66 Tire Kingdom car at:
  • Indianapolis
  • Texas
  • Mid-Ohio
  • Chicagoland

"Jay and I are going to make a great team. Having a partner out there changes everything. We can share data for our cars, and it gives us both an edge for solving any issues during a race. Two minds are always better than one.

The timing couldn't be better to bring a road-course specialist, like Jay, on to the team. With the Series turning their focus to road-courses, having Jay as a teammate is like having an ace in your pocket." -Sarah Fisher

"You have no idea how good it will be to be back in the car with Tire Kingdom.

To be back in the IndyCar Series is one thing, but to be with Sarah and Sarah Fisher Racing is something that's really special. All the other teams I've driven for I was just a driver; 'Get in your car and go win races.' But with Sarah Fisher Racing I've been welcomed into the team's family by not only being a driver but also a part of the team. It's a completely different feeling at SFR. It's extra special to be a part of what Sarah has built and to work with everyone there." -Jay Howard

REPORT: Jay Howard In Sarah's 2nd Car

UPDATE: Howard will run 4 races including Indy, Texas, Mid-Ohio, & Chicagoland using Fisher's old 2003 Dallara Chassis. Fisher is expected to run 9 races including both ovals and road/street circuits.

"We're going to get to bring a couple of more people on board, and to see us grow, it's really incredible" -Sarah Fisher
-----------------------------------

According to Curt Cavin, Sarah Fisher Racing has brought on Jay Howard to run select races in 2010.

Jay will run the #66 Tire Kingdom Dallara starting at the Indianapolis 500. He'll then run atleast one additional race but no more then 5.

More info to come......

Sarah Fisher Set To Announce 2nd Driver

After struggling in it's first year of operation, Sarah Fisher Racing has slowly grown into a Team of the future.

Tomorrow at 3pm SFR is set to announce the addition of a 2nd car at select 2010 events. Although it has not been confirmed, it looks as though Dollar General will sponsor the #66 Dallara as well as Sarah's #67.

They will also announce the schedules for both cars. Expect more races for Sarah.

The driver has not been announced, but he/she will be on hand at tomorrow's Press Conference. If the new car is indeed sponsored by Dollar General, it makes since that the driver will not need to bring money. Thus opening up the possibilities to it being a competent deserving veteran without financial backing.

Barrett Back In 2010

Running the first 3 races of the 2009 IRL Season, Stanton Barrett's Indycar career came into question after a rough Month of May. After not making the grid for the 93rd Indianapolis 500 Barrett and Team 3G charged on. Showing up at Milwaukee ready to race, Barrett unfortunately put the #98 Dallara into the wall, injuring his back and rendering the car unfixable. As 3G put Jaques Lazier in the car for the ovals and Richard Antinucci in for the road/street circuits, Barrett sat on the sidelines running stock car races until Twin-Ring Motegi where he finished 19th. As Lazier jumps back into the 3G ride for the season finale, Barrett has announced his commitment to run in the Indycar Series in 2010.

"I was looking forward to racing at Homestead. I tested there this spring and really liked it, and I was pumped about going back. We are all working to find the proper sponsorship for 2010 and, like for many other, that's really going to help with more seat time.

Right now, I'm working to see which races I can run next year. I had a blast in the races I ran this year and I learned a lot. I can't wait to get behind the wheel again and with as competitive equipment as possible" -Stanton Barrett

REPORT: Vitor Meira To Test Truck

UPDATE 4:30pm: “I plan to run in the IndyCar Series as long as it possible to do so. I love racing the Indy cars and I hope to do it for as long as I am able. The opportunity to test a truck along with Nelson Piquet Jr. came up and it sounded like fun. I thought I might be able to give Nelson some pointers on running an oval because this will be his first time on an oval track. Before I agreed to do it, I asked both A.J. and Larry Foyt about it, and they gave their permission. It doesn’t mean I’m looking to go NASCAR racing now because my priority is racing with A.J.’s team in the IndyCar Series. I’ve really enjoyed working with A.J., Larry, our sponsor ABC Supply and Honda Racing this year and I want to continue to work with them as long as they want me.

And we have some unfinished business at Indy.” -Vitor Meira

------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE 1:50am: According to A.J. Foyt Enterprises "Vitor is our driver for 2010"

-----------------------------------------------------

According to SPEEDtv, Indycar Series vet Vitor Meira will test a Camping World Truck next week. Meira will be joined by F1 castoff Nelson Piquet jr. at Rockingham Speedway testing for Red Horse Racing next Monday.

After getting fired by Panther Racing in the off season via E-mail, Meira signed with A.J. Foyt Enterprises for the '09 season. Breaking 2 vertebrae during the 93rd Indianapolis 500, Vitor was sidelined for the remainder of the season with the possibility of returning for the upcoming race at Homestead-Miami. Just prior to testing last Tuesday and Wednesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway it was announced that Meira would not return for the finale.

“We look forward to helping Vitor Meira and Nelson Piquet make the transition into NASCAR. It’s not an easy thing to do to go from an open wheel background to racing stock cars but they are both immensely talented and have the ability to be successful in any series they chose to race in.” -Tom DeLoach, Red Horse Racing Owner

Fisher's Fan Design Helmet Released

Update: The helmets done, and lookin good ---------------------------------------------------------------
If you watched any of the NFL games yesterday you probably noticed something a little different. From Peyton to Eli, nearly every player wore a little pink to help spread awareness for breast cancer.

A few weeks ago when announcing the Pink paint scheme for the season finale in Miami, Sarah Fisher Racing also announced a competition to design her helmet. With nearly 70 entries, today it was announced Dean Ackerman of West Bloomfield Michigan was the winner. In addition to Ackerman's design being displayed at Homestead-Miami Speedway, he'll also receive a replica helmet signed by Fisher.

As many of you know, Alex Lloyd will also help support the fight by dumping the #06 and using the #40202 this weekend. By texting "STAND" to 40202 you can donate $5 to cancer research and awareness.

"Whenever I need help, I look to my fans. They have always been so supportive of me. This is a really neat way for them to get involved in this initiative with Komen, as well as a way to be in the racecar with me. I knew they would come up with an awesome design, and I'm so excited to show it off in Miami.

This is going to be a great way to break in the new car. It's a lot lighter than my former primary car and it's going to have a fresh coat of pink paint. I think that's a recipe for speed!" -Sarah Fisher

"Both my aunts are survivors of breast cancer. They are survivors because of the research money that has been invested to fight this terrible disease. To be able to design Sarah's helmet for this special race is quite an honor and I can't wait to show it to my family." -Dean Ackerman
